Artists-in-residence Art Biotop NASU is a retreat one hour from Tokyo surrounded by the nature of Nasu area, which is known as a beautiful highlands. We offer guests fully equipped glass and ceramic studios with helpful instructors and the environment to practice existing artistic skills and develop further. Located nearby are our simple, elegant guest rooms, the residence, for relaxing between workshops and for sleeping overnight. This allows visitors to return to the workshops the next day or to explore the nature of the surrounding area of Nasu. On the grounds of Art Biotop, you can observe our garden where the natural and humanistic worlds meet and reward each other.

You can go for a walk, converse over tea, meditate, or read favorite books in the natural beauty of the surrounding forest Then join the workshops you are interested in or book free time to work and explore your creative side.

Ceramic Studios.

IMG_1072.JPGOur ceramics studio has all the tools and materials you would expect; with electric wheels, slab rollers, extruders, electric and gas kilns and a common glaze area. It has both automatic and manual potter's wheels, different types and colors of clay, plus all the necessary tools and materials for stamping process with an iron pattern.


Workshop 1:
Hand decoration of ceramic cups and bowls.
(10:00-13:00)

You can enjoy free drawing on a cup or a bowl. Write words or draw a picture on an item, have it fired and then glaze it to capture your ideas! This is an easy program that anyone can enjoy including children.

* 1,575 yen per cup or bowl.

Workshop 2:
Casting ceramics in an iron mold. (10:30-13:00)

VY4Z4747.jpgYou can try to create your own white ceramic cup with a special technique using iron patterns.

* 6,300 yen per person for 2 items.
* This workshop is for people over 10 years old.

Workshop 3:
Simple hand made ceramics. (14:30-17:00)

手びねり写真.jpgTake the opportunity to build your personal artistic vocabulary through hand made ceramics. Our instructor will demonstrate various hand made techniques and help you to make your own art.

* 6,300 yen for 2-3 items.
* This workshop is for beginners and advanced students..

Workshop 4:
Hand made items for Raku.

* 8,400 yen for 2 cups.

Glass Studios.

Our glass studio is fully equipped with such equipments as an electric fireplace allowing burner work, sand blasting and more.

Library.

IMGP7037.JPGIn the library besides the ceramic studio, you can see (and buy) the great works of ceramic and glass, Japanese / western rare books on art, etc.

Residence.

The minimal yet elegant residences are designed for the guests who are attending our workshops. There are 8 twin bedrooms, 3 double bedrooms and 1 deluxe twin bedroom.

Access.

By Car: about 20 minutes (10km) from NASU interchange of TOHOKU EXPRESSWAY.
By Train: about 30 minutes (20km) by car (taxi or shuttle bus) from Nasu-shiobara Station of JR East Tohoku-Shinkansen, which takes about 1 hour from Tokyo Station.

Notes:
* Reservation would be required to use the shuttle bus (please confirm in advance).
* There are several rent-a-car offices available near Nasu-shiobara Station.
